I know is early in the season and is not yet Christmas but, I was given the opportunity to review the book ”The King’s Christmas List”, written by Eldon Johnson and illustrated by Bonnie Leick and realized that the message related in the story does not have to be taught only at Christmas. This book teaches children about giving and helping others. It reminds parents the importance of teaching our children to be kind and generous to people around us.
The stroy begins with Emma and her dog Shu-Shu who were given a special inviation to the King’s birthday party. Emma and Shu-Shu decide to bring a cake Emma and her mom baked as a present. Emma also decides to wear her Christmas cape and brings her favorite teddy bear named Cherry Bear along. They are then picked up by a horse and carriage and on the way to the castle, they encounter people along the way, all which are in need of help.
On the way to the King’s castle, Emma and Shu-Shu give away their items to the people they meet. Emma selflessly gives away her cake and cape to an old woman and a little boy. Later, she gives away Cherry-Bear to a little girl crying, as she lost her own teddy bear. By the time Emma and Shu-Shu reach the King’s castle they are without a gift, only to realize that by helping the people they encountered, was the gift the King wanted.
This book is beautifully written and the message is clear- The true spirit of Christmas is not giving presents but to help those in need. The last couple of pages also include organizations that encourages people to donate to causes such as blood, water mission and World Vision, reminding us that there are ways in where people in the world can be helped.
The illustrations in the book are beautiful, capturing the essence of the story with expressive pictures and characters. Children will truly enjoy looking at these pictures as they read the book. I highly recommend this book as a every-day children’s read or as a beautiful Christmas gift. Either way, you can’t go wrong with this book.
