Growing up with a mentally ill mother incapable to nurture or love and with father that lusts from one woman to another, shaped van Eyck’s understanding of love and need for intimacy. Memoirs of a Widowed Mistress: A Love Story details the story of Author Megan van Eyck and her struggle of being in a loveless marriage and in an adulteress affair with a married man, Carlos.
Megan van Eyck allows her readers to see and understand a point in her life in where she felt compelled to fullfill selfish desires. She becomes a mistress and falls in love but when her lover Carlos is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease Megan soon realizes that she is just simply, a “mistress”.
The story itself is insightful and appreciate van Eyck’s honesty but I was unable to flow with the book and was unable to get a feel for the core, or root of what was going on with van Eyck internally. Yes, people have affairs everyday, and I am no one to judge but, I felt that if given the time, she would have worked her way to destroy Carlos’s Marriage. Did van Eyck love Carlos? I believe she did but for her own selfish reasons. She manipulated him and worked to change him. Did she love her husband? I’m not too sure but I believe she loved the idea of him and that of a happy family. Ultimately, I believe that van Eyck took love where ever she could find it and if the affair did not occur with Carlos, it would have been with someone else.
Do I agree with the affair? It’s not for me to agree or approve. People do whats necessary to fullfill their own happiness but, I did see how the affair changed her and her marriage. In my opinion, the events in this book is life, simply living the unexpected.
I commend Megan van Ecyk for sharing this story as I know it must have not been easy for her. Willem, her husband, in the end showed unconditional love and proof of having this memoir be put in print is proof of that.
