I believe that a great story mixed with creativity promotes our young readers to continue exploring books thus continue reading. That is why I loved Labyrinth’s Door – Anyia “Dream of a Warrior” by Jacquitta McManus as the format of this MagBook; a book in a magazine style, which includes the story of Anyia and some mind-boosting games such as suduko, a maze and even a learn to draw section. This book will surely keep any young reader interested and with the message given, the reader will also will feel empowered.
Anyia “Dream of a Warrior” is the story of Anyia, a young Nagaron princess. She is an adventurer, searching for the one person who can help her achieve her dream of becoming a warrior, Amoonda, the only female to ever be named a warrior for the courage she showed as she helped to forge the treaty of lands. Anyia wants to be like her, a warrior, hoping to bring honor to her family and her village. Yet, this would mean going against tradition, bringing dishonor to her family, especially her father and to her village. Nagaron girls were expected to become Yoras, fulfilling duties of cleaning and cooking, something Anyia did not want for herself. Will Anyia break tradions to obtain her dream of becoming a warrior, causing the downfall of the Nagaron people? Or, will Anyia obey traditions in becoming a Yora?
This story is simply captivating, proving a powerful message of following your dreams to become who you are but also, teaching the importance of relationships between family and traditions. The read itself maybe cumbersome at times due to the names of characters and places but, as I found with my 7-year-old niece, a great way to strengthen word pronunciation. The illustrations provided by Toujour Byrd are simply beautiful, using colors that are vibrant and expressive. Byrd captured facial expressions and emotions which related to the read through out the story. I also found the font of the read a plus making the book a quick read and the size of the book perfect, easy to put in a small purse or school bag. I kept in my bag and as I traveled with my niece, pulling out as so she could read in the car. She has now read the story of Anyia three times captivated by the imagination that one day she too can become a princess or a warrior. I recommend Labyrinth’s Door – Anyia “Dream of a Warrior” to young readers and their parents. A story that will truly be enjoyed and cherished.
