I review for BookSneeze

I just finished reading the children’s storybook Kathryn the Grape, written by Kathryn Cloward and Jody Duhamel to my 17th month old son. First, I have to say that my little boy enjoyed this book as not all books captivates his attention. I then read the book to my 7 year old niece, and it was a hit. The story of magic  instilled a quality or imagination and magic in all of us.

Kathryn the Grape is a story about a little girl named Kathryn and her friend, who is a butterfly named Maggie. Maggie gives Kathryn a special, magic wand that helps Kathryn create spells as to help her feel safe at night, by making monsters disappear. This special want also makes her nervousness go away in new situations and helps her feel confident when making new friends.

This special wand is only to be used for good and Maggie at times reminds Kathryn of that when she becomes upset when not allowed to play softball with her brothers. The wand then helps Kathryn join a girl softball team and is then nicked name “Kathryn the Grape” due to her love for the color purple. Kathryn then learns that her magic was really coming from inside her and that everyone also has some magic inside them.

Kathryn the Grape is a wonderful and sweet story. It teaches the reader about having inner strength and facing situations that may be uncomfortable or scary. Through the characters, each one relates a message of being understanding, helping others and on being willing to accept help. This book teaches you about  following your dreams. The illustrations beautifully done by Christine Winscott, adds to the story as the characters are illustrated with vibrant colors, emotions and expression. My son especially enjoyed Maggie the butterfly, as he always pointed at her picture. The color purple was also  found through out the book which added to Kathryn’s personality in the story.

Cloward, Duhamel and Winscott have captured magic in this book by inspiring children to believe in themsleves and their inner magic. This book  empowers children to accept themselves, encourages them to face their fears and to overcome challenges. This book is really a wonderful read for any child.
