Imagine trying to get pregnant. Then imagine getting pregnant through through IVF treatments only to find out that you was given the wrong embryos…that you was carrying another couple’s baby. That is what happened to Carolyn and Sean Savage and they tell of their horrible but also miraculous story in their book, Inconceivable: A Medical Mistake, the Baby We Couldn’t Keep, and Our Choice to Deliver the Ultimate Gift.
Carolyn and Sean always wanted a big family, so in trying to have their last child, they undergo IVF treatments. Soon after, Carolyn becomes pregnant but learns that the baby she is carrying does not belong to them. Carolyn and her husband, now face their most ultimate heartbreak. Keeping the baby for the rightful parents knowing, she could never get pregnant again. You can only imagine the pain Carolyn must have felt carrying a baby for nine months knowing you could not keep it. From the beginning, Carolyn and Sean knew they had to keep this baby for the biological parents. It was the right thing to do and they knew that if the situation was reversed, they would have wanted for their baby to live, even it was in the wrong body, in the wrong mother.
The Savages story truly gives a raw and emotional account of their ordeal. The book gives an honest presentation of the mixed emotions the Savage’s felt, from hope to anger, acceptance and inspiration, to loss and grief. This book is an emotional roller-coaster. I like the fact that book did not sugar-coat anything revealing medical mistakes and human emotion. Carolyn and Sean Savage are amazing people. I was impressed and admire their courage for putting their experience to print. It brings awareness to the medical field and IVF procedures. My heart breaks for them.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the power of human strength and courage. This book is sure to enlighten you on the power of unconditional love and on the human spirit. The Savages are two people you will always remember.
