Lately, I have been on motivational overdrive to get things done. I don’t know nor can’t explain why I have this sudden urgency to do things I have been putting off for so long. The only reason I came up with, is that the year is quickly coming to an end and somehow all the pieces of me have to come together as to embark on my own journey of things left undone, for just me.
The other night I dreamt I was in a college classroom, participating in a discussion. I woke up feeling uneasy and with a sense of failure. Seven years has passed, and I still have not made it back to school. I told myself that I would go all the way, told myself that when the time was right, I would go back for my Master’s. That time however, never came.
For the next two days, I slumped around the house feeling hazy and defeated. One night, my husband watched TV while the baby played in his room, not wanting to go to bed. I sat in the kitchen thinking, just thinking. As mothers and wives, we sometimes let go of who we are and on what may be important to us. Instead, we pass our lives working to make ends meet, we make sure the baby is up to date with his shots, we make sure dinner is ready on time, we make sure to bake cookies for bake sales, we are supportive when our husbands had a bad day at work and we even forget to schedule time for things we like to to do because somehow, our time is no longer our own. So, as I sat in my kitchen, just thinking, and I finally said, “shit, why not?”
That night I stayed up on the computer researching online schools and degrees. After much reseach signed up to obtain my Master’s in Public Administration. I start class in two weeks and now beginning to feel nervous. Can I really do this? What happens if I fail? Okay, I snap out out of it! There are many pieces of me, that makes up, “me”. So, just as I juggle being a mom, a wife and an employee, I will now add “student” to list of “me”.
I’m going to to do this and simply for me. This is something I wanted, peices of me left undone, but not for long. The pieces one day will come together and I will become complete.

A couple of weeks I noticed that my son is still not talking. At 28 months, he is still limited to ‘Da”, “Ma” and “Oooh”. I then noticed, that lately, he is having a difficult time expressing himself. he does a lot of pointing, pushing and pulling but, when my husband and I do not understand what he is trying to communicate, we are then faced with aggressive, angry melt-downs. Something is wrong!
I contacted my County’s Early Intervention Program for help. They came and performed an evaluation and whala.. my baby might have a language disorder. “Expose him to everything and vocalize what you are saying to him.” Huh? I’m thinking, “Exposure?” The kid goes to daycare, and when he is not in daycare he is tied to my hip, we go to the library, play groups, books, zoo’s, shopping malls, markets, parks, museums, etc. etc. So where else do we need to expose him to? Vocalize? We speak, talk, play music, recite the alphabet, mimic sounds, and sing! Is there something we are not doing?!!
I then sat and started thinking. Franco is going through a hard time and people need to understand that we are the ones that have to work along his pace and not the other way around. My husband and i decided to focus on our patience as at this current time we need a lot of it. Daily, my little boy points at something in a specific area when he wants something, we then go through every cabinet, every pantry, door in hope to find whatever he wants quickly before he has an outburst. It’s frustrating but, we have come to terms that he is going to need some extra help communicating. family and friends do not really get it. Yes, my kid may appear bratty but, I would be cranky and upset if nobody understood what I was trying to say too.
So, now I have therapist and social workers working and developing a plan of action for my son. They are coming up with words such as ”Behavioral concerns” or “Lack of Socialism” and ’Aggressive Tendencies” and so forth. Like my son, I am now speechless. We wanted help in making sure he was okay and he is. I also understand that being language delayed brings forth a whole stet of other problems but it all comes down to simply being language delayed.
I know Franco will be okay, the kid is smart and that is why this Psychological team was unable to give him a full diagnosis. It still baffles me that a ‘Diagnosis” is what they look for instead of trying to rule out. Franco has issues with speech but, did they forget that he was born three months before his actual due date? We didn’t, so “Ma” and “Da” will be a little more patient and work at baby’s own pace and at his own time. Before we know it, he will not be so speechless.
